Things To Do In Beechworth

Beechworth is a haven for great wine, food, shopping, history and beautiful scenery. Check out some of the links below to help plan your stay.

Murray to Mountains Rail Trail

Bike Riding

Following historical railway lines, the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail links the townships of Wangaratta, Beechworth, Myrtleford, Porepunkah and Bright. It is also great for visiting local wineries, many of which are situated on the trail. Beechworth is also a mecca for mountain bike riding with Beechworth’s custom built mountain bike park.
The Beechworth Chain Gang Mountain Bike Club welcomes visitors & locals alike to join them on regular social rides.

Experiences in Nature

The Beechworth Gorge is a beautiful walking, bike riding and driving loop. There are views to the Woolshed Valley and back towards the township of Beechworth. The loop is a one way sealed surface, with the turn-off just past the High School on the left. The landscape has large granite outcrops, native forest, magnificent rockpools and cascades that are perfect for a relaxed picnic. But take care the rocks are extremely slippery.

To walk the Gorge, allow 1.5 to 2 hours for a leisurely amble. There is a gradual incline of around 1km from the bottom of the Gorge so leave early on warm days to avoid the heat.

Tours

Tours of the Beechworth Historic Precinct and the Old Beechworth Gaol are excellent and give a real insight into the rich gold mining and bushranging history of Beechworth.

Ned Kelly, his Mum Ellen and many of the Kelly gang were incarcerated in the Old Beechworth Gaol. The guided one hour tour inside the old walls is fascinating.
