Beechworth Wine Region

Beechworth has been a wine growing region for generations. It has dozens of small family vineyards and cellar doors hidden away in mineral-rich hills on the outskirts of Beechworth. It’s a region that makes small amounts of high quality, boutique wine.

Some of the vignerons have Cellar Doors but to visit it’s best to phone ahead to make an appointment. You’ll be talking with the grower & maker so it’s well worth planning in advance. And most of the families will welcome getting out of their vineyards and wineries to meet with you and talk about their passion.

We have a wine dinner every few months with friends, the perfect excuse to drink new and interesting wines. Last weekend our theme was recipes from the fabulous ‘Neighborhood’.

We loved the Pret-a-Blanc from Schmolzer & Brown, which is a blend of Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris. Another favourite was the Sorrenberg Gamay. Sorrenberg has been making wines in Beechworth for 30 years. The wines are biodynamic and it’s definitely worth a visit to see how well they care for their vines and soil. Other small makers we love are Madman’s Gully, Traviarti, A. Rodda, Willem Kurt, Warner Vineyard and the list goes on.

Check-out Beechworth Vignerons to plan your Cellar Door & winery visits.

If you’re keen to sample Beechworth wines but don’t have time to visit the makers, The Cellar Door Wine Store has an excellent selection. Lachlan, the proprietor has great wine knowledge and can walk you through the styles and brands.
